For the first time Bosch has produced a rear hub motor system, dubbed the ‘Hub Line’, that is designed for the urban e-bike market.
The 45Nm hub drive is joined by a new updated ConnectModule that enhances a bike’s anti-theft credentials, as well as a compact LED controller and Intuvia 200 display.
Built with several smart sensors able to detect and adapt around a rider’s style, the Hub Line is tuned to deliver its help where it’s really needed, such as stop-start city situations where early acceleration support is helpful, as well as handling moderate inclines in such a way that blends seamlessly with the rider’s cadence. Better still, the Hub Line is compatible with electronic shifting, be it manual or automatic, blending your gear choice with the motor’s output in real time.
At 2.3kg Bosch isn’t adding much weight to your e-bike, and with its slick 100mm diameter, the motor really doesn’t stand out at all in the rear wheel.
Intended to be used in partnership with the Bosch Hub Line is the PowerTube 360 battery, adding 2.1kg to make a 4.4kg package, excluding the controller and display. This is the slimmest battery that Bosch makes at only 68mm across. While many brands estimate an up to 100km range from a battery like this, Bosch estimates, probably more realistically, an 80km pedal-assist support.
As for the ConnectModule partnering this launch, this will house a GPS, mobile communications and motion sensor to deter thieves, as well as an audible alarm.
The latest generation of this module introduces two key innovations. Bluetooth Low Energy technology is used for accurate tracking within a few metres. This helps locate an e-bike in places where conventional GPS trackers often fall short, such as basements and backyards. The module can also be retrofitted to compatible e-bikes easily using a flexible attachment. The extended features are part of the Flow+ paid subscription service.
“With our new products centred around the Hub Line, we are ushering in a new era of urban eBikes. Not only are these lightweight, agile, and inspiring, with their clear and modern design language, but they also revolutionise the urban riding experience. At the same time, we are making connected eBiking accessible to even more people. Allowing eBikers to benefit from all the advantages of our smart system: from the familiar Bosch quality and durability to intuitive digital services and reliable support – all from a single source and engineered in Germany,” says Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems.
